About the Institute

Mission

The Institute for National Security and Military Studies is focused on the development of tomorrow’s leaders and intelligence professionals through educational, research and outreach experiences.  We serve our community and nation to make a positive impact on security and the relationship between our military and society, both regionally and globally.

About Us

Founded in 2021 at Austin Peay State University, the Institute for National Security and Military Studies (INSMS) is the first of its kind in the Southeastern United States and is supported by the state legislature to build upon Tennessee’s position as a national leader in serving the National Security community. The Institute is built upon three pillars: research, community outreach, and education with the goal of putting Tennessee at the forefront of National Security.

Research

INSMS is a regional research institution with special research focus on national security, intelligence, military strategy, and military studies particularly as they relate to key US partners and strategic challenges in Eastern Europe. With the Institute’s proximity to Fort Campbell US Army Base, INSMS also has interests in research on US Special Forces Operations.  INSMS faculty have expertise in the Eastern and Western Europe regions with experience in NATO civil-military relations, Balkans and Ukraine conflicts, and partnerships between US and Eastern European countries.

Community Outreach

INSMS hosts a speaker series that recruits regionally, nationally and internationally recognized experts for various engagements that provide students and the community a unique learning experience.  The Institute has partnerships with academic and research institutions both nationally and globally to collaborate on military and security topics.  Regionally, INSMS sponsors events for the National Guard and local high schools to increase awareness about the National Security Studies Program at Austin Peay State University.

Education

INSMS oversees Austin Peay State University’s Bachelor of Science in National Security Studies.  NSS is a 120-hour program focusing on aspects of National Security in the Intelligence Community, Homeland Security, Global Security, Corporate Security, and GIS.  NSS can be completed fully online with many 8-week courses available.  Graduates in the NSS degree program are competitively positioned for careers in all sectors of national and corporate security.  Active and reserve component service members benefit from education and professional development that will enhance their military careers. Vision

We will be the Southeast’s Institute of choice for national security and military related topics in research, education, and outreach, highlighting Tennessee’s commitment to service.
